Year 3 in the woods June 2021

July 2021

Year 3 have continued developing their DT and bushcraft skills in the last fortnight, this time focusing on developing sawing skills.  The children worked in pairs to use large bow saws safely, with friends holding the wood still, using gloved hands.  The children used large adult bow saws and will further progress these skills over years to come by using the same saws in smaller groups, and by using smaller saws independently.

We have also LOVED the Ninja Stealth hiding game, and some children have got their Ninja skills down to a fine art!

So far this term, the year 3 class have been exploring fire lighting techniques, using a ferrous rod and steel.  The children have discussed fire safety and chosen to follow the rules carefully to keep themselves safe.  They have seen how stone age people may have lit fires using flint stone from the landscape and catching embers on charcloth, then transferring the ember into a spark using a tinder bundle.
