Year 4 in the Forest

01.12.21

This week we finally saw some more wintery weather in the woods in the form of a cold wind and rain, the children didn’t notice though- they were busy!! We used hacksaws safely to cut the notches in our bows, that the string will tie into.  The children also had the opportunity to work on teamwork skills, solving a simple problem under time pressure.  Some children got so engrossed in this that they continued in their free time, improving personal bests and streamlining their performance for efficiency!!  Click for video link…here  It was brilliant to hear groups talking through ideas and being reflective about the way they had worked together, demonstrating our school values of resourcefulness and reflection.

The last two days in the wood we have begun the construction of simple bows.  The children have used loppers to cut down green willow to size, and then peelers to make it streamline and create design features, we will continue with these next week.  The children also used problem solving skills and developed team work playing minesweeper games and exploring the woods for play.

More whittling this week with the Year 4 groups,  as well as constructing obstacle courses and developing independence, confidence and communication skills to navigate around it.

We also had an opportunity for leaf play since the weather was so kind to us and our huge leaf pile is still dry and fun!

We started our Autumn adventures in the woods this week with whittling.  The children are well experienced with using tools safely, wearing safety gloves, working away from the body and following instructions to keep us safe.  This week the children used Opinel folding knives to whittle arrows.

They also developed their team skills, playing minesweeper and developing a collective memory, improving communication skills and problem solving.

Finally they did some very high level hiding in a hide and seek games, considering camouflage as they chose their spots to hide in!
