Home learning 01/02/21 Weaving

In Forest school this week we have learnt a little about he importance of weaving to human beings. We found out that from Stone Age to Anglo Saxon times people used willow and hazel sticks as a basis for house building, and that throughout history humans have woven threads and materials together to make cloth and clothing.

We used rigid bamboo canes stuck firmly into the mud and some old string to have a go at creating a strong woven structure. You could use sticks or cricket stumps, or work smaller, or indoors and use pencils or straws to weave around. Try and keep them still, maybe by using blu tack or getting someone to hold them for you while you get started.   Use any type of thread, string, wool or rope to wind between them going over and under and back again. You’ll get the hang of it! Keep it tight and see how much you can weave…

Here’s our outdoor versions…
